Daily Step Calorie Burner

Convert your daily step count into calories burned based on your weight, walking pace, and terrain.

Calorie estimates are approximations based on MET values and average stride length. Actual burn varies by individual fitness level, gait, and body composition. Not medical advice. Cook Media Systems assumes no liability. See Disclaimer.

How Steps Are Converted to Calories

MET values: This calculator uses Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) values from the Compendium of Physical Activities. Walking METs range from about 2.0 (slow) to 4.3 (brisk) to 8.0+ (running). Your calorie burn = MET x weight (kg) x hours.

Step length: Average step length is approximately 2.5 feet (0.76m) for adults. Distance = steps x step length. At 10,000 steps, most adults walk roughly 4-5 miles.

Terrain multiplier: Incline walking significantly increases calorie expenditure. A 10% grade roughly doubles the caloric cost of flat walking at the same speed.

Caloric deficit: One pound of body fat contains approximately 3,500 calories. Consistent daily step increases can create a meaningful caloric deficit over time without additional exercise.

These estimates use population-average MET and stride values. Individual results vary. Not intended as medical or dietary advice. Cook Media Systems accepts no liability. See Disclaimer and Terms.
