How the Retirement Countdown Works

This countdown calculates the exact time remaining until your planned retirement date in years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds. It also computes the number of workdays remaining (excluding weekends and optionally federal holidays), total paychecks left, and the percentage of your career that is already complete. Enter your current age and target retirement age, or set a specific retirement date.

How to Use This Tool

Enter your birth date and planned retirement age (or a specific target date). The countdown starts ticking immediately and updates in real time. The dashboard shows workdays remaining, Mondays remaining, Friday afternoons remaining, and other milestones. You can also set milestone alerts (e.g., "1,000 workdays remaining"). For retirement savings planning, try the Investment Return Calculator or the Savings Goal Calculator.

Retirement Countdown FAQ

What is the average retirement age?
The average actual retirement age in the United States is approximately 62 for women and 64 for men. The full Social Security retirement age is currently 67 for anyone born in 1960 or later. Early Social Security benefits are available at 62 but with a permanent reduction. Many financial planners suggest planning for retirement at 65 while building flexibility to retire earlier if savings allow.

Retirement Planning Milestones

Key financial milestones mark the path to retirement readiness. By age 30, aim to have 1x your annual salary saved for retirement. By 40, target 3x. By 50, target 6x. By 60, target 8x. By 67, target 10x your final salary. The 4% rule (withdrawing 4% of your portfolio in the first year of retirement, adjusted for inflation thereafter) suggests you need 25 times your annual spending to retire. Social Security replaces approximately 40% of pre-retirement income for average earners. The gap between Social Security and your desired lifestyle defines how much personal savings you need. Working even 2 to 3 years longer significantly improves retirement security through additional savings, compound growth, and higher Social Security benefits from a delayed claiming age.
