Why Count Down to Retirement?

Seeing the exact number of workdays, paychecks, and Mondays remaining makes the goal feel tangible. Instead of thinking "I have 20 more years," you can say "I have 1,043 Mondays left." That reframe can be surprisingly motivating, especially on rough days.

How the Numbers Work

We count calendar days from today to your retirement date. Mondays are counted as every Monday between now and then. Paychecks depend on your pay frequency. Commutes assume 5 per week (one way counts as one commute, so 10 trips per week of which we count weekdays). The career progress bar shows what percentage of your career is already behind you.

When should I plan to retire?
That depends on your savings, Social Security strategy, health insurance needs, and lifestyle goals. Common ages are 62 (earliest Social Security), 65 (Medicare eligibility), and 67 (full Social Security for many). The FIRE movement targets much earlier, sometimes in your 40s or 50s. Check out our retirement and FIRE calculators for detailed planning.
How many work days are in a career?
A typical 40-year career with 260 work days per year (52 weeks x 5 days minus holidays) totals about 10,000 to 10,400 work days. That is roughly 80,000 hours of work, or about 9 years of continuous, non-stop working.
