How many pizzas do you actually need? Finally, the math that matters.
This calculator estimates how many pizzas you need to feed your group based on the number of guests, appetite level, and pizza size. The math is based on surface area: a 16-inch pizza has about 201 square inches (4 times the area of an 8-inch pizza, not 2 times, because area scales with the square of the diameter). The average adult eats 2-3 slices of a large pizza.
Enter the number of guests, appetite level (light, average, or hungry), and pizza size (small, medium, or large). The calculator shows how many pizzas to order, suggested topping variety (how many different types to get for group satisfaction), and the total cost estimate based on average pizza prices. It also accounts for kids, who eat fewer slices than adults.
The mathematics of pizza ordering reveals surprising insights. Pizza area scales with the square of the diameter, so a 16-inch pizza (201 sq in) has 78% more pizza than a 12-inch (113 sq in), not 33% more as the diameter difference might suggest. This means larger pizzas are almost always the better per-square-inch value. For parties, plan 2 to 3 slices per adult and 1 to 2 per child as a baseline, adding 20% for hungry crowds. The average American eats approximately 23 pounds of pizza per year. Nationally, Saturday night is the most popular time for pizza delivery, with Super Bowl Sunday being the single highest volume delivery day of the year.
