Four Ideal Weight Formulas

This calculator uses four clinically validated formulas that are widely used in medicine and pharmacology for dosing calculations and health assessments:

Devine (1974): Male: 50 + 2.3 x (inches over 60) kg | Female: 45.5 + 2.3 x (inches over 60) kg

Robinson (1983): Male: 52 + 1.9 x (inches over 60) kg | Female: 49 + 1.7 x (inches over 60) kg

Miller (1983): Male: 56.2 + 1.41 x (inches over 60) kg | Female: 53.1 + 1.36 x (inches over 60) kg

Hamwi (1964): Male: 48 + 2.7 x (inches over 60) kg | Female: 45.5 + 2.2 x (inches over 60) kg

Why Different Formulas Give Different Results

Each formula was developed using different populations and methodologies. The Devine formula is the most commonly used in clinical medicine, particularly for drug dosing. The Robinson and Miller formulas tend to give slightly different results for very tall or very short individuals. Using all four provides a reasonable range rather than a single misleading number.

Limitations of Ideal Weight Calculations

These formulas do not account for muscle mass, frame size, age, or ethnicity. A bodybuilder at 5'10" and 200 lbs may be far healthier than a sedentary person at 5'10" and 155 lbs. The BMI-based healthy range (18.5-24.9) provides additional context. For a more complete picture, consider body fat percentage, waist circumference, and overall fitness level.
