This calculator uses the Widmark formula, the most widely accepted scientific method for BAC estimation. It factors in the number of standard drinks consumed, body weight, biological sex (which affects the ratio of body water to total weight), and time elapsed since drinking began.
One standard drink contains approximately 14 grams of pure alcohol. This equals: 12 oz of regular beer (5% ABV), 5 oz of wine (12% ABV), or 1.5 oz of distilled spirits (40% ABV / 80 proof). Craft beers, large pours of wine, and mixed drinks often contain more than one standard drink.
At 0.02% BAC, you may feel relaxed with slight mood elevation. At 0.05%, you experience lowered alertness, impaired judgment, and reduced inhibitions. At 0.08% (the U.S. legal limit), you have significant impairment of coordination, reaction time, and judgment. At 0.15%, you may experience significant balance issues and impaired mental processing. Above 0.30% is life-threatening, and above 0.40% carries a high risk of coma or death.
This is an estimate only. Actual BAC varies based on food in your stomach, medications, metabolic rate, liver function, hydration level, and individual tolerance. Food significantly slows alcohol absorption; drinking on an empty stomach can result in BAC levels 50% higher than drinking with a meal.
