Calculate the area of any room or space in square feet, meters, or acres.
Square footage measures the area of a two-dimensional space. For rectangular rooms, simply multiply length by width. For irregular rooms, break them into rectangles, calculate each area, and add them together.
Square footage is essential for: estimating flooring costs (multiply area by price per square foot), calculating paint needed (one gallon covers roughly 350 sq ft), pricing rental or sale of real estate (price per square foot is the standard comparison metric), sizing HVAC systems (a general rule is 20 BTU per square foot), and determining property taxes (which are often based partly on square footage).
A typical bedroom is 120-200 sq ft. A master bedroom is 200-350 sq ft. A living room is 200-400 sq ft. A single-car garage is about 200 sq ft, and a two-car garage is about 400 sq ft. A standard parking space is about 160 sq ft. Knowing these benchmarks helps you estimate without measuring.
1 square foot = 0.0929 square meters = 144 square inches. 1 acre = 43,560 square feet (roughly the size of a football field without end zones). 1 hectare = 107,639 square feet = 2.47 acres.
