Find your dog's real age using the updated scientific formula, not the old "multiply by 7" myth.
The old rule of multiplying a dog's age by 7 was never based on science. In reality, dogs mature much faster in their first two years, then age more gradually. A 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human, not a 7-year-old. A 2-year-old dog is closer to a 24-year-old human.
This calculator uses size-adjusted aging rates based on veterinary research. Small dogs tend to live longer and age more slowly after maturity, while giant breeds age significantly faster. A 10-year-old Chihuahua is in much better shape than a 10-year-old Great Dane.
Research from the University of California San Diego in 2020 proposed a logarithmic formula based on DNA methylation patterns: human age = 16 x ln(dog age) + 31. This calculator combines that approach with size-based adjustments from the American Veterinary Medical Association guidelines.
