How Body Fat Is Calculated (U.S. Navy Method)

The U.S. Navy body fat formula uses circumference measurements of the neck, waist, and (for women) hips along with height. It was developed for military fitness assessments and correlates well with more expensive methods like DEXA scans for most people.

Males: 86.010 x log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 x log10(height) + 36.76

Females: 163.205 x log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 x log10(height) - 78.387

Body fat categories for men: Essential fat 2-5%, Athletes 6-13%, Fitness 14-17%, Average 18-24%, Obese 25%+.

Body fat categories for women: Essential fat 10-13%, Athletes 14-20%, Fitness 21-24%, Average 25-31%, Obese 32%+.

Note: This is an estimate. Circumference-based methods have limitations, especially for very muscular or very lean individuals. DEXA, hydrostatic weighing, or BodPod provide more accurate measurements.
